Recently on a family trip to Hawaii i had the chance to go on a charter fishing for bonefish. It was a friday morning and i awoke to a beautiful sunny day, perfect for bonefish fishing. I was up in the blink of an eye, dressed and ready for the days fishing ahead of me. It was 7am when i arrived at the jetty and there the charter operator was waiting on me. I boarded his vessel and off we went across the bay towards the flats. When we got there we were in just enough water to keep a boat floating so we started cruising a shallow sand bank with the local guide taking a while to spot the first Bonefish... no wonder they call them "the ghost of the flats", most of the time you wouldn't see the fish until you were right on top of them but after spotting 3-4 and spooking them I finally found one which I got to put a cast to, so i cast the lure just behind the fish. My Cranka Crab hit the surface and slowly sunk to the bottom as I saw the silver ghost turn around and head straight for the lure sucking it up off the bottom and continuing on its way, once realised it was hooked it was game on ! It had a crazy first run that saw 150m of braid stripped off my reel in matter of seconds. I was just praying it didn't spool me and It got that close that we ended up chasing this fish down just to get a bit of line back and then all of a sudden my line went slack, my heart sank as I thought I had lost the fish but lucky for me it was still there. The fish had turned and swam towards the boat just as fast as i could wind the reel. I still had the fish on and after 5 minutes of screaming runs we had a chance to net this amazing fish. We got it up beside the boat and with one foul swoop of the net this 10lb 8oz Bonefish was mine.
It was an experience i'll never forget! The fish was released after a few pics :)
