Choosing Flathead Fishing Lures | We Flick Fishing

Its a very common question i get asked, "what are the best lures for flathead fishing?" And, i must say, its a loaded question because there are so many lures out there that will catch flathead. So, what we've done is looked back at our experience in fishing lures and catching flathead and made a list of the lures that have worked best for us. Keep in mind that this is only a guide and there is no such thing as 'the best lure'!

1) Nories Spoon Tail Shad

The Nories Spoon Tail Shad is the soft plastic lure i use most when fishing for flathead. I started using it around 4 years ago and have been impressed ever since. The compound of the plastic is soft and life like, the colour range is stunning and they come in 4 different sizes from 4 inch through to 6 inch so whether your targeting small or big flathead, the Spoon Tail Shad has you covered.

2) Westin Hypoteez 5 Inch

The Westin Hypoteez is a new soft plastic lure i have only just started using to fish for flathead. As you can see the attention to detail in this lure is world class and with it comes a great range of colours too. A third of the way down the body you will notice it has a 'broken back' which enhances the action of the paddle tail which gives a fantastic swimming action and you cant ask for more than that!

3) Westin Swim 65

Another lure ive just begun to use is the Westin Swim. This lure comes in 3 different sizes, 65mm, 100mm & 120mm and are quite large in their profile. And, I must say, i haven't used this lure all that much but i can see its great potential especially when fishing for flathead in the shallows. The so called 'S Curve' action of this swimbait is set to drive flathead crazy, its simple yet awesome!

4) Keitech Swing Impact Fat 3.8 Inch

Keitech make the best soft plastic lures in the world, without a doubt, and in their range are many models that are just screaming 'FLATHEAD"! This is the Swing Impact Fat and boy does it have a wicked swimming action and even better colours that are perfectly suited to for the old Dusky Flathead. It comes in various sizes from 70mm, 100mm and 150mm so it has you covered!

5) Keitech Easy Shiner 4 Inch

All i need to say is Keitech got it right! The profile is slim, the paddle tails large, the balance is near perfect and the colour range is great! The 4 inch Easy Shiner is right up the top as far as my preferences go!

6) Ecogear Balt 3.5 Inch

This soft plastic lure is starting to get a quite the following and its not hard to see why with its realistic design and action. With this particular lure i'm going off the word of trusted anglers that talk very highly of the Ecogear Balt. Personally i'm looking forward to giving it a run as im sure it'll work a treat!

7) Duo Realis Minnow 80

This is the hard body lure i use a lot of when im targeting flathead on the shallow sand flats. Its cast ability is great allowing me to cover a lot of ground and the lure works well with slow and quick retrieve speeds and also responds well to aggressive twitching which makes a lot of flash in the water. A great hard body lure for flathead!

8) Duo Realis Vibration 62

When it comes to deep water, especially over 4 meters, the Duo Realis Vibe 62 is a lure i commonly use for 1 reason and that is it allows me to cover ground quickly. It sinks quickly, makes a lot of noise and casts a mile making it a very effective fishing lure for flathead.
